Providing a compassionate yet challenging confidential counselling service to help you reach the core of any issue

Benefits With the help of counselling provided by Conversations from The Heart you may understand better what is troubling you, discover the root causes of your problems, develop strategies and resolve the issues. Consequently, you may feel more joy, better able to make choices that work for you and, thus, more in control of your life. Another benefit may well be uncovering hidden potential within yourself.

Difficulties you bring with you could include:

  • Physical symptoms e.g. headaches, skin rashes, palpitations, stomach ulcers
  • Psychological e.g. anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, addictions
  • Unresolved issues e.g. abuse of all kinds, loss, trauma
  • Relationship and family issues
  • Identity issues e.g. sexual orientation
  • Generalised concerns e.g. feeling stuck, lost, burnt out
  • Spiritual matters

Profile:

As a humanistic integrative counsellor I view the whole of you as being important – body, mind, emotions, spirit and soul. The space is yours to talk about whatever you need to express. I listen with all of myself to all that you are saying with your words, gestures and feelings. This attention to the here-and-now keeps the work we are doing together very much alive.

If you are troubled by behaviours, such as addictions, or physiological symptoms, such as anxiety or panic attacks, then we may do some focussed work on these to assist you in gaining control over them.

Talking about your current problems may lead us to make links with unresolved events from the past. Often these are continuing to impact on you in the present. Exploring these past events, such as abuse, trauma, family deaths, can result in resolving and healing them, so that they can be laid to rest.

Invariably what happens between us in the therapy room is a reflection of how you are in your life. We can use this information to help shed light on how you can make changes in your relationships with others.

Because everyone is different I tailor my approach accordingly. Thus, I may use cognitive-behavioural methods, gestalt, assertiveness training – and inspiration in the moment! Listening to my intuition is a hallmark of my service.

Conversations From The Heart is the name of my business because that is what I do!

Client Feedback:

“I have felt love emanating from you towards me, especially when you can feel something that I am denying to myself. Therefore I have felt loveable, good enough and precious in your presence.” Maria

“The way you remember facts about my different aspects of my life and draw them to my attention gives me a sense of continuity and helps me make connections.” Mick

“You work from such a deep place within yourself that you are like a highly tuned instrument.” Anna

Experience:

Having begun counselling 30 years ago, it has been a constant thread through a career that has included mental health social work, health promotion, adult education and training, counselling in G.P. practice and private practice as well as supervising counsellors. This has involved working with people from a broad spectrum of cultures, ages, physical and intellectual abilities, sexual orientations, religious and spiritual beliefs.

As a qualified supervisor I have supervised trainee counsellors through to well-established practitioners, individually and in groups, working in organizations and in private practice.

Training and qualifications:

  • Counselling and groupwork training, Richmond Fellowship 1977-79
  • Certificate in Social Work, Bristol University 1980
  • Certificate in Counselling Skills, Westhill, Birmingham University 1990
  • Graduate Diploma in Counselling Studies, Keele University 1997
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision, Keele University 1998

Professional Associations:

  • British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Accredited Counsellor
  • UKRCP Registered Counsellor
  • Gloucestershire Networking Group for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (Co-ordinating role)

Supervision:

I describe my supervision work as supervisee-centred. This is because I believe that as therapists we provide the best service to our clients when we become as finely tuned an instrument as possible. Thus, I encourage my supervisees to bring the whole of themselves to supervision. One of my supervisees has described this experience as my helping him develop his heart. I am particularly interested in what is happening in the here-and-now of the supervision session as this may give us valuable information about what is taking place with the counselling. For counsellors based in organizations the impact of the organization on the therapeutic work adds another dimension.

As a qualified supervisor I have supervised trainee counsellors through to well-established practitioners, individually and in groups.

I love supervision and I consider it invaluable. Because of this I offer supervision to complementary health practitioners, so that they may have the benefit of a regular supportive yet challenging space for themselves. This can improve the quality of service to the client whilst assisting the practitioner in developing professionally.
